The 4C Entity, LLC is pleased to announce that CPRM
Specification, SD Memory Card Book, SD-SD Part, Revision
0.91 is now available. The new revision incorporates usage rules based
on date and time, both of which were previously supported in the 4C Specification

Multimedia applications enabled by 4C technologies are creating vast new market opportunities for content providers, service providers, application developers and device manufacturers. 4C Entity has worked closely with the digital entertainment distribution ecosystem to provide the best content protection. Its CPRM/CPPM specification was designed to meet the robustness and renewability requirements of content owners while balancing the implementation needs of both the consumer electronics and PC industries.
Compelling new business models and use cases are being enabled by 4C technologies. For example, KDDI Corporation, a Japanese telecommunications carrier, recently introduced a new DVD video download service to enable consumers to burn movies, animation and video content to DVD-RW/RAMs on their PC and Digital Video Recorders manufactured by Toshiba using broadband connections for Japan market. Customers can purchase premium entertainment content, with the high quality of commercially available DVDs, for unlimited use. The new “DVD Burning” service enabled by CPRM for network download includes about 3,000 titles--primarily movies, dramas and animations from 90 content providers in Japan and overseas, including Warner Bros. and TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System). There is also unreleased DVD content available including the latest titles and older titles.
Using CPRM, content and service providers could roll out exciting new services that would enable consumers to playback content downloaded from a music distribution site to cell phones, in-car systems and other portable digital devices. In the future, users will be able to easily move music libraries between a variety of SD-enabled devices, including cell phones, portable audio players, PCs, car stereos and other mobile devices.
CPRM also could enable services for recording digital terrestrial TV broadcasts. Mobile TV programming is already delivered in Japan through “One-seg TV,” a new form of digital terrestrial broadcast (ISDB-T). With new digital content distribution and broadcasting services, carriers and cell phone operators could provide security for content downloaded to their specific network mobile phones. The content could be bound to the cell phone devices and thus prevents unauthorized copying to other devices or computers.
CPRM also can be used for retail store media kiosks. Consumers can select titles from a library of thousands of movies and television shows, insert their SD card, swipe their credit card or membership card, and the selected title is written to their SD card. The business models for this use could include video content subscription, rental, and purchase models.
